Outlaws make enough big plays to grind out playoff win - Jun 22, 2008
By MIKE ZIMMER Gazette Sports Editor Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. The Billings Outlaws were just enough of both to grind out a 47-30 win over the Omaha Beef in a first-round United Indoor Football league playoff game Saturday night. The win, which came before the smallest crowd of the season (2,672) at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark, earns Billings a trip to Sioux Falls, S.D., this coming Saturday, where the Outlaws (11-4) will face the three-time defending UIF champion Sioux Falls Storm (11-3) for a berth in United Bowl IV. Should the Outlaws beat Sioux Falls, they will host the United Bowl on July 12. = 1181278800) && (nAdsysTime = 1204264800) && (nAd...

Football is just part of a day's work for Outlaws players - Jun 17, 2008
By MIKE ZIMMER Gazette Sports Editor Cell phone money. That's what the Billings Outlaws play for each Saturday night. The $200-per-game salary for United Indoor Football league players doesn't exactly pay for a life of luxury. In fact, it doesn't pay for much at all. "Basically, it pays your cell phone bill," says Outlaws coach Heron O'Neal. "They get 200 a game and a $50 bonus if we win ... that 200 or 250 dollars isn't much. It might pay for their phone bill and maybe a couple of meals during the week. "We do have great owners here. Our players get things that most players at this level don't get - like a free place to stay (Outlaws players can stay at ...

Outlaws roll past Wichita, 58-31 - Jun 08, 2008
WICHITA, Kan. - The Billings Outlaws shook off a slow start and cruised to a 58-31 United Indoor Football win over the Wichita Wild on Saturday night. The win, coupled with Bloomington's 64-43 win over Omaha, puts Billings in position for a first-round home game in the upcoming UIF playoffs. Billings (9-4) wraps up the regular season this Saturday at River City (St. Joseph, Mo.), while Omaha (9-4) hosts Sioux City on Saturday. A Billings win (or an Omaha loss) this week would mean Billings will host Omaha in a first-round playoff game on June 21. By JOHN LETASKY Of The Gazette Staff The Sioux Falls Storm showed the Billings Outlaws - and the 4,606 fans in attendance Saturday night at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark - why they are the three-time defending United Indoor Football league champions. With a solid fourth quarter of football, the Storm put away the Billings Outlaws 62-52. With the win, Sioux Falls (9-2) put itself in the driver's seat to clinch the UIF West Division title and home field throughout the playoffs. A Billings win would have done the same for the Outlaws (8-3). It was Billings' first loss at home this season. The Storm won the regular season series with Billings 2-1. "It was back and fourth until ...

By The Gazette Staff OMAHA, Neb. - The Billings Outlaws put an entire season of road struggles behind them with one dominating performance. Billings overwhelmed the Omaha Beef with 47 first-half points Saturday night en route to a 61-40 win, in the process taking a huge step toward earning home-field advantage in the United Indoor Football league playoffs. With four weeks remaining in the regular season, the Outlaws can all but lock up home field for the playoffs with a win this Saturday night against Sioux Falls at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark. Billings (7-3) and Sioux Falls (8-2) are tied atop the UIF West Division standings, each with two division losses. The Outlaws an...

Outlaws blowout Bloomington, 60-26 - May 11, 2008
By MIKE ZIMMER Gazette Sports Editor Though the scoreboard read 33-8 in their favor, there was no party atmosphere in the Billings Outlaws' locker room at halftime. In fact, the party was just getting started. Billings dominated the Bloomington Extreme from start to finish Saturday night, handing the highly touted visitors a 60-26 beating in front of 4,422 fans at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark. "We played four quarters of good football ... for the first time all season," said Outlaws defensive end Eugene Phillips. "Our theme this whole week was to finish. "We've had teams on their heels before, just like we did tonight. But tonight, no one came in the locker...

Motivated Williams enjoys his best season as an Outlaw - Apr 28, 2008
By MIKE ZIMMER Gazette Sports Editor Artavious Williams is known as a great pass blocker. But truth be told, the 6-foot-5, 280-pound offensive lineman would be perfectly happy if the Billings Outlaws never passed the ball. "He loves to punish people," says Outlaws quarterback Chris Dixon. "That's just the style of football that he loves. Artavious is the best pass blocker I've ever played with, but he loves to get out and run and punish people as a run blocker." And when the normally mild-mannered Williams feels the Outlaws are getting too pass-happy, he steps out of his shell. "Oh yeah. He lets me know," laughs coach Heron O'Neal. "Big Tay and I ...

Outlaws enjoying big boost in attendance - Apr 28, 2008
By MIKE ZIMMER Gazette Sports Editor A little stability is going a long way for the Billings Outlaws. The local indoor football team is in the midst of its best season - by far - in terms of attendance. The Outlaws have drawn 13,692 fans in three home games this season, an average of 4,564 per game. That's an increase of more than 2,000 per game over last season and an increase of more than 1,500 per game over 2006, when Billings went 16-1 and won the National Indoor Football League championship. Undoubtedly, the biggest reason for the spike in attendance is stability. In the past year, the team's owners have spent more than $4 million in building the Outlaws SportsPlex - a state...
